Job Purpose

Supervision of the efficient day-to-day arrangements for the delivery of customers’ products on time and in full using the most cost effective means possible and best use of available resources, whilst complying with Transport Legislation and Health & Safety.

Maximising the utilisation of the ATL Fleet through efficient planning of deliveries and collections as well as maximised utilisation of ATL drivers in line with current driver’s hours and WTD legislation.

Main duties and responsibilities

HR Responsibilities

1 Uphold organisation’s core values. Responsible for providing a positive and encouraging atmosphere at all times to ensure all staff work to their best abilities.

3 Effective supervision of health, safety & welfare of the team.

Health and Safety Responsibilities

6 Support, comply and ensure complicity with Health, Safety and Environmental regulations, the company handbook, Quality standards and all other company policies and procedures.

7 Responsible for the effective supervision of health, safety & welfare for self and the wider team.

8 Ensure all loads meet safety standards.

Quality Responsibilities

9 Ensure all processes are adhered to by all the Planning team staff.

10 Analyse management reports in order to continuously improve processes and outcomes.

11 Monitor and report daily KPIs to the Line Manager, identifying areas for improvement complete with proposals for change.

Operational Responsibilities

12 To ensure drivers fulfil their daily duties and work load, challenging where necessary to optimise service, whilst ensuring 100% compliance to safety or transport legislation

13 Day-to-day requirement to Despatch/ Debrief drivers and ensure vehicle compliance is logged accurately, including management of infringements

14 Conduct incident investigations and reporting in relation to any damaged freight/vehicle within agreed format and timelines.

15 Assist with the management of vehicle defects through the VOR process

16 Ensure vehicle earnings are greater than vehicle costs to achieve a healthy margin as decreed by the Line Manager.

17 Communicate routes and liaise with other Depots / Sites.

18 Source and plan backloads to avoid vehicle empty running.

19 Allocate resource and plan Drivers to vehicles.

20 Facilitate the sickness absence process, including accurate record keeping and RTW interviews.

21 To ensure all PODs are correctly signed for and uploaded on the IT system within the time frame given.

22 Customer’s communication for all Pallet Network.

23 Pallet Network administration.

You will from time to time be required to undertake other duties of a similar nature as reasonably required by your line manager. You are required to follow all ATL policies and procedures at all times and take account of ATL guidance

Person Specification

Criteria: Qualifications and Training**


GCSE (or equivalent) qualification in English Language and Maths


Qualification in Supervisor Management.

CPC Qualification

Criteria: Knowledge and Experience


Experience of working in a transport office

Experience of routing / planning within a multi-drop environment.

Good geographical knowledge the UK


Knowledge of Drivers Hours, tacho-graph and WTD legislation

Supervisory / Management experience within a logistics environment.

Experience of managing teams within tight quality and efficiency parameters.

Experience of people and performance management.

Criteria: Skills and Aptitudes


Intermediate / Advanced proficiency in the use of MS Excel, Word, Outlook and Power Point

Ability to question, challenge and improve upon existing processes

Flexibility and the ability to adapt to changing circumstances
